How the aggregate bag calculator works

Start with the aggregate mass you already need in tonnes. The calculator converts that figure to kilograms, adds your chosen allowance, divides by the supplier’s stated bag weight and rounds up to a whole bag. It then shows the mass you will actually buy after that whole-bag rounding.

Bags required = ceil((tonnes × 1,000 × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)) ÷ bag weight in kg)

Worked example

2.4 tonnes in 25 kg bags: 2.4 t = 2,400 kg. With no extra allowance, 2,400 ÷ 25 = 96, so the order is 96 bags. If the same requirement were supplied in 800 kg bulk bags, the whole-bag order would be 3 bulk bags.

Small bags and bulk bags are sales units, not universal weights

Do not assume that every “bulk bag” is one tonne, or that every small bag uses the same packed weight. Products and suppliers vary. Enter the declared weight for the exact product you intend to order.

Why whole-bag rounding matters

A mathematical requirement can sit between two purchasable pack counts. This tool always rounds the bag count upward so the output reflects whole bags. The “mass actually bought” figure makes the extra quantity created by that rounding visible instead of hiding it inside the estimate.

Use supplier weights rather than a generic bulk-bag assumption

Current merchant listings show why this matters: some UK construction aggregates are sold in bulk bags with a minimum packed weight around 800 kg rather than a nominal one tonne, and the stated actual mass can vary with moisture content. Treat the product listing or delivery documentation as the source of truth for the bag you are buying.

Before you order

  • Confirm that the tonnage requirement itself is based on the correct aggregate, depth and density.
  • Enter the packed bag weight shown by the supplier, not an assumed “standard” weight.
  • Use the allowance field only for a deliberate contingency; do not use it to disguise uncertain measurements.
  • Check delivery access, unloading arrangements and safe handling before choosing between many small bags and fewer bulk bags.

Frequently asked questions

Are bulk bags exactly one tonne?

No. Bulk-bag packed weights vary by product and supplier. Use the declared weight for the actual product rather than assuming 1,000 kg.

Can I use this for 20 kg, 25 kg or 800 kg bags?

Yes. Enter the packed weight in kilograms for the bag size you are buying, provided it is between 1 and 2,000 kg.

Why does the calculator round up?

Suppliers sell whole bags, so a fractional result has to be rounded up to a purchasable quantity.

What does “mass actually bought” mean?

It is the whole number of bags multiplied by the bag weight. It shows how much material the rounded order contains.

Should I add an extra allowance?

Only if you deliberately want contingency for the job. Measure and calculate the base requirement first, then apply a modest allowance if appropriate.

What if I only know the area and depth?
