How Much Concrete Should You Order?

A practical UK guide to measuring slabs, footings and post holes, combining multiple pours, choosing an explicit allowance and checking the result against the product or supplier you will actually use.

Keep geometry, allowance and commercial ordering checks as separate stages. That makes assumptions visible and easier to verify.

Concrete ordering becomes unreliable when three different questions are collapsed into one number: what is the geometric volume?, what extra volume do I want to allow?, and how does my chosen supplier or bagged product sell the material? Work through those questions in that order.

1. Measure the actual pour

For a rectangular slab, measure the finished length and width and the intended concrete thickness. Convert all dimensions to metres before multiplying. A depth of 100 mm is 0.1 m; therefore a 5 m × 4 m slab at 100 mm is 5 × 4 × 0.1 = 2.0 m³.

For strip footings, measure each run separately if widths or depths change. A 10 m run that is 600 mm wide and 300 mm deep is 10 × 0.6 × 0.3 = 1.8 m³. If there are several runs, calculate each one and add them. That is easier to check than trying to invent one average rectangle.

For circular pads, use π × radius² × depth. For a post hole or cylindrical pier, the same formula applies to the circle at the top multiplied by its vertical depth. The Concrete Calculator handles these shapes and lets you combine several pours.

2. Break awkward jobs into simple zones

Irregular pours are usually easier to estimate as a set of simple shapes. Sketch the job, label each zone and record the dimensions beside it. Keep thresholds, pads, widenings or separate footings as their own lines. You can then add the volumes and still see where the total came from.

If excavation depth varies, measure at several sensible points rather than assuming one corner represents the whole job. Where the surface or formation is genuinely irregular, the calculated geometric volume is only an estimate; this is exactly why the base volume and your chosen allowance should remain separate.

3. Choose an allowance deliberately

An allowance is not part of the geometry. It is an additional amount you choose for uncertainties such as small depth variations, uneven excavation, formwork tolerances or spillage. The right figure depends on the job. Do not add an allowance simply because a website silently defaults to one.

For example, a measured 2.0 m³ slab with a selected 10% allowance becomes 2.2 m³. The useful audit trail is: 2.0 m³ measured + 0.2 m³ allowance = 2.2 m³ planning order.

Watch for double counting. If your drawing dimensions or contractor quantity already include an overdig or contingency, adding another percentage can duplicate the same allowance.

4. For bagged concrete, use the product’s finished yield

Do not convert volume to bags from bag weight alone. A 20 kg or 25 kg label describes dry product mass; the key quantity for volume planning is the amount of finished concrete the particular bag produces. Enter the manufacturer’s stated yield in litres or cubic metres per bag.

If your order volume is 0.24 m³, that is 240 litres. If the specific product states a finished yield of 10 litres per bag, the mathematical requirement is 24 bags. If it states a different yield, the bag count changes. Whole-bag purchasing is rounded up only after the calculation.

5. For delivered concrete, check the supplier’s commercial constraints

Ready-mix is normally ordered by volume, but the calculated cubic metres are not the whole purchasing decision. Ask the supplier about minimum order quantity, delivery increments, short-load charges, access, discharge method, lead time and what happens if the pour is delayed.

Supplier rules vary. CEMEX’s current UK concrete calculator, for example, displays a 1 m³ minimum order. Treat that as a supplier-specific current condition, not a universal industry rule. Check the supplier you intend to use when you order.

Access matters just as much as arithmetic. Confirm that the delivery vehicle can reach the planned discharge point and that the site can receive and place the concrete within the available time. A mathematically correct volume does not solve an unsuitable delivery plan.

6. Keep the concrete order separate from the whole slab build-up

Worked example: two separate pours

Suppose a job has a 4 m × 3 m slab at 100 mm plus a 2 m × 0.5 m threshold at the same depth. The slab is 1.2 m³ and the threshold is 0.1 m³, giving a measured total of 1.3 m³. A chosen 7.5% allowance adds 0.0975 m³, producing 1.3975 m³ before any supplier-specific ordering increment.

Keeping the two zones visible makes it easy to find a measurement error later. If the threshold changes, you only recalculate that zone.

Common concrete-ordering mistakes

  • Entering 100 mm as 100 metres or 0.01 m instead of 0.1 m.
  • Using maximum excavation depth as though the whole pour is that deep.
  • Applying an allowance twice.
  • Assuming every bag of the same weight has the same finished yield.
  • Rounding each small pour before adding them, instead of rounding the final buying quantity.
  • Ignoring supplier minimums, delivery access or discharge constraints until the truck is booked.
  • Using a quantity calculator as a substitute for structural design or concrete specification.

Final pre-order check

  1. Recheck the site dimensions or drawing.
  2. Keep all dimensions in consistent units.
  3. Confirm the measured base volume.
  4. Record the allowance separately and why you selected it.
  5. For bags, verify the exact product yield.
  6. For ready-mix, confirm minimums, increments, access and current commercial terms with the supplier.
  7. For structural or regulated work, follow the actual design/specification rather than generic online advice.
