Material estimating is most reliable when the measurement, the mathematical quantity and the commercial order are treated as separate stages. This guide focuses on that process rather than hiding assumptions in a single number.
Cubic metres need three dimensions
Volume is length × width × depth or height. Every dimension must be in metres before multiplication.
Convert millimetres before multiplying
100 mm is 0.1 m; 150 mm is 0.15 m. Missing that decimal point creates a result one thousand times too large.
Separate geometric volume from order quantity
The measured volume is the mathematical volume. An ordering allowance is a separate decision based on ground variation, waste, compaction or product packaging.
Split irregular work into simple shapes
Calculate each slab, pad, trench section or excavation separately and add the volumes. This makes assumptions visible and easier to check.
