Material estimating is most reliable when the measurement, the mathematical quantity and the commercial order are treated as separate stages. This guide focuses on that process rather than hiding assumptions in a single number.
Estimate the patio in layers
A patio material list normally includes surface paving plus sub-base, bedding material and jointing. Calculate each layer separately.
Start with finished surface area
Measure the patio footprint and any cut-outs. Then calculate slab quantity from the specific slab size or pack coverage.
Use depth for bulk materials
Sub-base and bedding quantities are volume calculations: area × depth. Convert millimetres to metres first.
Do not confuse m³ and tonnes
Bulk materials may be sold by weight. Converting volume to tonnes requires a density or supplier conversion for the actual material.

Run the calculation twice: once from the raw measurements and once from a second independent measurement or drawing dimension. If the two results differ materially, resolve the measurement before adjusting the waste allowance.
