Groundworks estimating guides

Excavation, trench, aggregate, sub-base and spoil volume calculators.

What this topic covers

Keep measured excavation, loose spoil and imported aggregate separate. Volume-to-weight conversions require an explicit density, while spoil planning may require a separate bulking assumption.

Recommended estimating sequence

  1. Measure the job and keep the original dimensions.
  2. Calculate the base area, volume or length with compatible units.
  3. Replace variable defaults with the actual product or supplier information.
  4. Add a visible cutting, breakage or ordering allowance only where it is justified.
  5. Round the result to whole packs, bags or stock lengths at the purchasing stage.

Quantity estimating helps with planning and ordering. It does not replace structural design, project specifications, manufacturer instructions or regulatory approval where those are required.
