Choose the board direction first

Board direction affects the number of board rows, stock-length cuts and where joints fall. Measure the deck length and width relative to the intended board run.

Estimate the surface and frame separately

Surface boards depend on chosen run direction, actual board face width, planned gap and stock length. Joists depend on the actual frame layout and the maximum centres specified for the chosen decking/system. Keep that quantity separate from structural span design and from the surface-board calculation.

Account for picture frames and fascia intentionally

Perimeter picture-frame boards, steps, fascia and breaker boards are extras. Add them as measured linear lengths instead of hiding them in a large waste percentage.

Check stock-length efficiency

A linear-metre result is not automatically the best cutting list. Compare the required runs against the stock lengths your merchant actually sells.

  • Ignoring the effective cover width of grooved boards
  • Forgetting double joists or trimmers at joints/openings
  • Applying one waste percentage to both frame and surface

Pre-order checklist

  1. Re-measure the main dimensions or compare them with a current drawing.
  2. Replace generic coverage, density, spacing or pack figures with the actual product data.
  3. Keep the base quantity, waste allowance and pack rounding as separate steps.
  4. Check whether any part of the job requires professional design, approval or a manufacturer-specific installation method.
  5. Save the raw measurements so the estimate can be reproduced if the supplier queries it.
