Measure area and layer depths separately

The driveway footprint is common to several calculations, but each layer has its own depth. Record the area once and keep each depth explicit.

Distinguish excavation from imported material

Excavation volume is an in-situ volume. Removed spoil can bulk up, while imported aggregate may be ordered by tonnes using a supplier density.

Use compacted and loose values carefully

Do not assume one cubic metre excavated equals one cubic metre of loose spoil or one cubic metre of compacted sub-base.

Convert the final quantity to the supplier’s sales unit

Bulk aggregate may be sold by tonne or bag. Use the current product density or coverage supplied by the merchant.

Pre-order checklist

  1. Re-measure the main dimensions or compare them with a current drawing.
  2. Replace generic coverage, density, spacing or pack figures with the actual product data.
  3. Keep the base quantity, waste allowance and pack rounding as separate steps.
  4. Check whether any part of the job requires professional design, approval or a manufacturer-specific installation method.
  5. Save the raw measurements so the estimate can be reproduced if the supplier queries it.
