Calculate the in-situ excavation first

Measure the hole, trench or excavation as it exists in the ground. This gives the geometric in-situ volume.

Apply a bulking factor separately

Excavated material can occupy more volume after it is loosened. Keep the bulking factor explicit so the assumption can be changed for the material.

Treat skip capacity as a planning figure

Nominal skip size does not guarantee every material can be loaded to the brim. Weight, prohibited materials and safe fill levels can constrain the real load.

Check the waste route before work starts

The quantity calculation is only one part of planning. Confirm what the skip supplier accepts and any limits applying to dense material.

Pre-order checklist

  1. Re-measure the main dimensions or compare them with a current drawing.
  2. Replace generic coverage, density, spacing or pack figures with the actual product data.
  3. Keep the base quantity, waste allowance and pack rounding as separate steps.
  4. Check whether any part of the job requires professional design, approval or a manufacturer-specific installation method.
  5. Save the raw measurements so the estimate can be reproduced if the supplier queries it.
