Count fence bays before posts

Start with each straight panelled run and the actual installed bay pitch for the chosen system. If post geometry contributes to the bay width, include the real system dimension rather than assuming panel width alone. Round the bay count consciously; the final bay may need cutting or a custom width.

Add corners, gates and ends explicitly

A straight run often needs one more post than panels, but corners, gate openings and changes in direction create additional post positions.

Keep foundation material separate

Post-mix quantity depends on the real post count, the chosen product and the actual installation. After the fence layout is established, use the product-backed bags-per-post rate or a known fill-volume/yield calculation rather than a universal bag rule.

Measure sloping ground rather than assuming level bays

Stepped or raked fences can change post length, gravel-board use and the amount of cutting required.

Pre-order checklist

  1. Re-measure the main dimensions or compare them with a current drawing.
  2. Replace generic coverage, density, spacing or pack figures with the actual product data.
  3. Keep the base quantity, waste allowance and pack rounding as separate steps.
  4. Check whether any part of the job requires professional design, approval or a manufacturer-specific installation method.
  5. Save the raw measurements so the estimate can be reproduced if the supplier queries it.
