Separate each tiled surface

Floors, shower walls and splashbacks may use different tiles or layouts. Measure them separately rather than using one total area.

Convert tile dimensions correctly

Tile length and width in millimetres must be converted to metres before calculating tile area.

Choose waste from layout complexity

Straight layouts in simple rooms often create less cutting than diagonal patterns, niches and multiple corners. Keep the allowance visible and adjustable.

Use the adhesive and grout product data

Coverage varies with substrate, trowel, tile size and joint geometry. Product-specific coverage is more useful than a generic bag count.

Pre-order checklist

  1. Re-measure the main dimensions or compare them with a current drawing.
  2. Replace generic coverage, density, spacing or pack figures with the actual product data.
  3. Keep the base quantity, waste allowance and pack rounding as separate steps.
  4. Check whether any part of the job requires professional design, approval or a manufacturer-specific installation method.
  5. Save the raw measurements so the estimate can be reproduced if the supplier queries it.
