How the insulation board calculation works

Whole boards = ceil(adjusted area ÷ board face area)

Board face area = board length × board width after converting millimetres to metres. Adjusted area = measured area × (1 + chosen allowance ÷ 100).

What you need from the product

Use the exact board length and width stated for the insulation product you intend to buy. Do not assume every PIR, phenolic, EPS or other rigid board uses the same format.

Worked example

For 45 m² of insulation using boards measuring 2400 × 1200 mm, one board has a nominal face area of 2.88 m². At 0% extra, 45 ÷ 2.88 = 15.625, so the geometric purchase quantity rounds up to 16 whole boards.

1. Measure the net area

Add separate rectangles if needed. Do not rely on a gross room area when only part of a wall, roof or floor is being boarded.

2. Check the actual board

Use the length and width from the exact product. Thickness is deliberately not used to calculate board count.

3. Choose any extra

Set extra material consciously for the real cutting pattern, framing layout and whether useful offcuts can be reused.

Why this calculator does not default to 2400 × 1200 mm

That is a common format for some rigid insulation products, but it is not universal. Current UK Celotex information lists GA4000 at 1200 × 2400 mm, while CW4000 uses 1200 × 450 mm. UK retail ranges also include other widths. The correct quantity therefore starts with the dimensions of the product actually being ordered.

Why the extra allowance starts at 0%

A fixed waste percentage can hide the most important part of the estimate: whether the board layout suits the spaces being filled. A simple continuous layer may reuse offcuts efficiently, while between-member work can require more cutting. This calculator shows the base quantity separately and leaves the extra allowance visible and editable.

Board count does not choose insulation thickness

This calculator estimates quantity only. It does not select insulation type or thickness, calculate U-values, confirm thermal performance, check fire requirements or verify Building Regulations compliance. Use the project design and current manufacturer/system guidance for those decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Should I deduct studs, joists or rafters?

Use the actual area that the chosen board layer needs to cover. For between-member insulation, a simple area calculation may not represent the cutting pattern well, so verify the layout and choose extra material accordingly.

Does board thickness change the number of boards?

Not for a single layer covering the same face area. Thickness affects specification and thermal performance rather than the face-area calculation. Multiple layers should be estimated as separate layers.

Can I use this for Celotex or Kingspan PIR boards?

Yes for quantity planning, provided you enter the actual length and width of the exact board. The calculator does not assume a brand, thickness or product suitability.
