Calculate loft insulation rolls
Use a known loft-floor area, or calculate one rectangular area from length × width. Then enter the manufacturer’s stated m² coverage per roll for the thickness you are installing.
How the loft insulation roll calculation works
Adjusted area = measured loft area × (1 + chosen allowance ÷ 100). The final purchase quantity rounds up only after the chosen allowance is applied.
Use the manufacturer or merchant coverage stated for the exact roll and thickness you intend to install. Do not substitute a generic “standard roll” area.
Worked example
For a 50 m² loft layer using a roll stated to cover 8.01 m², the base calculation is 50 ÷ 8.01 = 6.24 rolls. At 0% extra, that rounds up to 7 whole rolls. If you deliberately choose 5% extra, the adjusted target is 52.50 m² and still rounds to 7 rolls.
Use the area that will actually receive this layer. Split irregular lofts into rectangles and add them before calculating.

Keep any cutting or contingency allowance separate from the measured area, then round to whole rolls at the end.
Why there is no default roll coverage
Current UK manufacturer data shows substantial variation. Knauf Loft Roll 44 currently lists 13.89 m² per roll at 100 mm, 9.18 m² at 150 mm, 8.01 m² at 170 mm and 6.84 m² at 200 mm for one Combi-Cut range. ISOVER Spacesaver currently lists 14.13 m² at 100 mm, 9.34 m² at 150 mm, 8.15 m² at 170 mm and 6.03 m² at 200 mm.
That is why this calculator asks for the actual m²-per-roll figure instead of pre-filling a generic coverage or multiplying one coverage by an assumed number of layers.

How many rolls of loft insulation do I need?
Divide the measured area for one insulation layer by the manufacturer’s stated coverage per roll for that exact product and thickness, then round up to a whole roll. Add any chosen extra allowance before the final rounding.
Why should I calculate each insulation layer separately?
Different thicknesses can have different roll lengths and therefore different m² coverage per roll. A single “number of layers” multiplier can be misleading if each layer uses a different product or thickness.
Should I automatically add 5% or 10% waste?
No universal percentage is built in. Loft shape, obstructions, roll format and reuse of offcuts vary. The calculator starts at 0% and lets you enter the allowance you have chosen for the real job.
Does this calculator tell me what insulation thickness I need?
No. It is a purchasing-quantity tool only. Confirm the required thermal build-up and product suitability separately before using the roll quantity.
