Use a known floor area, or calculate a rectangular room from length × width. Then copy the coverage in m² from the exact laminate pack you plan to buy.
How the laminate flooring calculation works
Adjusted area = measured floor area × (1 + chosen allowance ÷ 100). The final answer rounds up because laminate is bought in whole packs.
Use the pack’s stated coverage in m². Do not infer pack coverage from a generic plank size or another laminate range.
Worked example
Suppose a room measures 5 m × 4 m, so its base area is 20 m². If the chosen laminate states 1.99 m² per pack and you deliberately choose a 7.5% allowance, the adjusted area is 21.50 m². 21.50 ÷ 1.99 = 10.80 packs, so the purchase quantity is 11 whole packs.
For a rectangular room use length × width. For an L-shape or multiple areas, calculate each section and add them first.
Use the exact m²-per-pack value for the laminate you intend to buy. Current product ranges do not all contain the same coverage.
Set the allowance consciously for the real layout. The calculator does not impose a universal waste percentage.
Why this calculator starts at 0% extra
Retail flooring calculators often add a cutting/wastage allowance automatically. That can be a useful ordering convention, but it is not a property of the room or the laminate pack itself. Straight rooms, awkward alcoves, diagonal layouts, herringbone products and a decision to keep spare boards can all produce different ordering needs. Starting at 0% keeps the measured requirement and the user-selected buffer separate.
Pack coverage varies by product
Check the exact product rather than relying on a “standard pack”. Current UK retail listings show laminate sold in different coverage quantities per pack. That is why this tool leaves the pack-coverage field blank until you enter your product’s figure.

- Using a generic pack coverage instead of the value printed on the chosen product.
- Adding an allowance before measuring the true floor area, then accidentally adding another allowance later.
- Rounding the floor area too early instead of rounding only the final purchase quantity to whole packs.
- Treating one rectangle as the entire floor when alcoves or connected sections add extra area.

How many packs of laminate do I need?
Divide the adjusted floor area by the coverage per pack and round up to the next whole pack. The calculator does that after keeping your measured area and chosen extra allowance visible.
What if my room is L-shaped?
Split it into simple rectangles, calculate the combined floor area, then use the “I know the floor area” mode. The Floor Area Calculator is designed for that first step.
Should I always add 10%?
No universal percentage is imposed here. Some retailers recommend or automatically apply 10%, but the appropriate ordering buffer depends on the actual layout, product, cuts and whether you want spare material. Enter the allowance you have decided to use.
Does this include underlay?
No. This page calculates laminate packs only. Check the coverage and installation requirements of the actual underlay product separately.
