Mulch & Bark Calculator
Start with the actual area and chosen spreading depth to calculate cubic metres and litres. Then convert to whole supplier units only from the product information you actually have.
Measure the mulch layer, then use real supplier data
The universal calculation is area × chosen depth. For ordering, either enter the stated litres per supplier unit or use the supplier’s coverage figure at its stated depth.
How this mulch & bark calculator works
Use the actual square metres of the bed, border or landscaped area you intend to cover.
Depth depends on the product and its purpose. Enter the depth that applies to your actual job rather than accepting a generic default.
Use either the supplier’s stated litres per unit or its coverage per unit at the stated depth. The final purchasing quantity is rounded up to whole units.
Base volume (m³) = area (m²) × depth (mm ÷ 1,000). Litres = m³ × 1,000. Extra allowance is applied only after the base volume is shown.
Why there is no 60 L default
UK bark and mulch products are sold in different formats. Small and retail bags can be 50 L, 60 L or 100 L, while current bulk products can be supplied as 500 L, 750 L or other volumes. Enter the exact figure for the product you are pricing.
Supplier coverage mode
If the supplier states that one unit covers a particular number of square metres at a stated depth, this calculator converts that claim into an equivalent unit volume. That makes the purchasing calculation consistent even when a supplier markets the product by coverage rather than litres.
A measured 10.00 m² bed at a chosen 50 mm depth needs 0.500 m³, or 500 L, before any allowance. If the actual product is stated as 100 L per bag, the theoretical requirement is 5.00 bags and the base whole-bag minimum is 5. With 0% extra, the final order remains 5 bags.
Do not use one depth for every bark product
Mulch, decorative bark, pathways and play surfacing can have very different depth requirements. The calculator deliberately does not turn a supplier example into a universal recommendation. For safety surfacing in particular, use the specified product system and installation guidance rather than a garden-mulch rule of thumb.
Material quantity estimate only. This tool calculates volume and purchasing units from the values you enter. It does not verify product suitability, play-surface safety performance, landscaping design, settlement or ground preparation.

Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator assume a standard mulch depth?
No. Enter the spreading depth that applies to the exact product and intended use.
What bag size should I enter?
Enter the litres stated for the actual bag or bulk bag you plan to buy. UK supplier unit sizes vary, so there is no generic 60 L default.
Can I use supplier coverage instead of litres?
Yes. Enter the stated square metres covered per unit and the exact depth attached to that coverage figure. The calculator derives an equivalent volume per unit and rounds the final order to whole units.
Does the extra allowance account for settlement?
No automatic settlement or compaction factor is imposed. The extra percentage is a user-controlled ordering allowance only.
