How the whole-room estimate works

A room estimator has a different job from a single-surface plasterboard calculator. It first turns the room into wall and ceiling areas, then applies the board dimensions you enter. That keeps the geometry visible and makes it easier to spot an unrealistic input before ordering.

Walls

For a rectangular room: 2 × (length + width) × height.

Ceiling

If included: length × width, unless you enter a known ceiling area.

Sheets

Total boardable area ÷ actual sheet face area, then your allowance, then round up.

Doors and windows: deduct area, not confidence

Deducting a large opening improves the geometric area estimate, but it does not promise a matching reduction in purchased sheets. Whole sheets still have to be laid out around corners, reveals and joints, and not every offcut will suit the next section. For small openings it can be clearer to leave the gross area intact and treat the resulting offcuts as part of the layout.

Worked example: 4 m × 3.5 m room

Example only: a 4 m × 3.5 m room with 2.4 m walls has a 15 m perimeter and 36 m² gross wall area. Deducting 3 m² of major openings leaves 33 m² of wall. Adding the 14 m² ceiling gives 47 m² total. With 2.4 × 1.2 m boards, each sheet covers 2.88 m², so the theoretical requirement is 16.32 sheets. An illustrative 5% allowance produces 17.14 sheets, rounded up to 18 whole sheets. The 5% is an example, not a recommended universal allowance.

Use the actual board you intend to buy

The estimator starts at 2.4 × 1.2 m because that format appears in current UK ranges from both British Gypsum and Knauf. It is not the only format available, so change the dimensions to match the exact board you plan to order. For size and thickness comparisons, use the UK plasterboard sheet sizes reference.

Measure the walls in sections

Add the gross areas together and enter that combined figure in “Known gross wall area”. It overrides the simple rectangular-room wall formula.

Handle the ceiling separately

If a sloping or stepped ceiling cannot be represented by room length × width, enter its measured area in “Known ceiling area”.

Keep sheet layout in mind

Area arithmetic cannot optimise every cut. Use the sheet total as a planning quantity, then check orientation, joints, offcut reuse and the actual installation system.

How do I calculate plasterboard for a whole room?

For a simple rectangular room, calculate gross wall area from the room perimeter multiplied by wall height, deduct major openings, add the ceiling area if it is being boarded, then divide the total by the face area of the sheet you intend to buy.

Should I deduct doors and windows?

You can deduct significant openings from wall area, but the sheet purchase may not fall by the same proportion because offcut reuse, board orientation and room layout still matter.

Does this estimator add 10% waste automatically?

No. It starts at 0% and keeps any additional cutting allowance visible and editable.

Can I use a different plasterboard size?

Yes. Enter the actual board length and width. The 2.4 × 1.2 m starting values are a convenience, not a universal standard.

The calculator itself uses only your measurements. The default 2.4 × 1.2 m board dimensions were checked against current manufacturer listings; product selection and performance still need to be verified for the system you are building.
