There is no single universal UK plasterboard sheet size
2400 × 1200 mm is a widely available full-size format and has a nominal face area of 2.88 m². Current British Gypsum and Knauf ranges also list 1800 × 900 mm boards and longer 1200 mm-wide boards including 2500, 2700 and 3000 mm lengths, depending on the product.

Why the table says “common”, not “standard”: current manufacturer catalogues overlap on several sizes but do not offer one identical size matrix across every plasterboard. Product type, thickness, edge and performance requirements all affect the available variants.
Common plasterboard thicknesses: 9.5, 12.5 and 15 mm
Thickness is a separate decision from sheet length and width. Current UK manufacturer ranges include standard plasterboard at 9.5 mm, 12.5 mm and 15 mm, but the correct board is the one required by the wall or ceiling system — not simply the thickest or lightest option.
9.5 mm
Current British Gypsum, Knauf and Siniat standard-board ranges include 9.5 mm products. It is slimmer and lighter than the same face size in a thicker board, but suitability still depends on the specified system and fixing layout.
12.5 mm
12.5 mm appears extensively across current standard wallboard ranges and UK merchant stock. Treat it as a common starting point, not a substitute for the project specification.
15 mm
15 mm standard and specialist boards are also available. A thicker board may form part of a higher-performance system, but thickness alone does not establish a fire, acoustic, moisture or structural rating.
Do not choose plasterboard on thickness alone. Fire resistance, sound insulation, moisture performance, fixing centres and system build-up depend on the exact board and tested/specified construction. Check the current manufacturer system data for the job.
Which plasterboard sheet size should you use?
The “best” sheet size is mainly a layout, access and specification question. A larger board covers more area and may reduce joints, but it is also physically larger to transport and position. A smaller board can be easier to handle in tight access, while a longer board can suit a taller run when the specified product is available in that length.

Confirm board type, thickness and system requirements first. Then choose from the dimensions actually offered for that product.
Check access before ordering
A board that works perfectly on paper still has to pass through doors, stairs, corridors and the route to the work area.
Think in whole sheets, not only m²
Two sizes with similar total coverage can produce different cut patterns, joint positions and reusable offcuts.
Separate walls and ceilings if needed
If they use different board types, thicknesses or dimensions, estimate them as separate material lines.

How much area does one plasterboard sheet cover?
Convert the dimensions to metres and multiply length × width. Thickness does not change the face area.

Is 2400 × 1200 plasterboard the same as 8 × 4?
In everyday trade language, 2400 × 1200 mm boards are often described approximately as “8 × 4”. They are not an exact 8 ft × 4 ft conversion: 8 ft is 2438.4 mm and 4 ft is 1219.2 mm. For estimating and ordering, use the manufacturer’s stated metric dimensions rather than an approximate imperial nickname.
