How the coving calculation works

Whole pieces = ceil(adjusted run ÷ stock length)

For dimensions mode, perimeter = 2 × (room length + room width). Adjusted run = measured run × (1 + chosen allowance ÷ 100).

What you need from the product

Use the real length of one coving piece. Current UK ranges include different stock lengths, so a generic default can change the number of pieces you buy.

Worked example

A 5 m × 4 m rectangular room has an 18 m perimeter. If the chosen coving is supplied in 3 m pieces, the base requirement at 0% extra is exactly 6 pieces. If you deliberately enter 10% extra, the adjusted run becomes 19.8 m and the purchase quantity becomes 7 whole pieces.

1. Measure the run

For a rectangle, use length and width. For bays, chimney breasts, missing sections or irregular rooms, measure the actual coving run and use that directly.

2. Check the stock length

Read the supplier or manufacturer specification for the exact profile. Do not assume every coving product is supplied in 2 m or 3 m lengths.

3. Choose any extra

Add only the allowance you have decided is appropriate for the real cuts, offcut reuse, room complexity and spare-stock policy.

Why stock length changes the answer

British Gypsum currently lists Gyproc Cove 100 at 3,000 mm, while Gyproc Cove 127 includes 3,000 mm and 3,600 mm variants. Wickes also lists current coving products in both 2,000 mm and 3,000 mm lengths. That is why this calculator requires the stock length rather than silently assuming one.

Allowance is not a universal constant

Some UK suppliers advise adding a percentage for cutting waste, while others suggest buying an extra length. More elaborate profiles and awkward rooms can also change the practical cutting plan. The calculator therefore starts at 0% and shows the base whole-piece quantity separately from any allowance you add.

Linear metres are not a cutting plan

This is a purchasing estimate from total length. Corners, wall segments, patterned or ornate profiles, damaged ends and whether offcuts can be reused may mean the real installation needs more stock. Plan the actual cuts before ordering valuable or special-order coving.

Common coving estimating mistakes

  • Assuming every coving profile is supplied in the same stock length.
  • Adding a generic waste percentage automatically instead of planning the real cuts.
  • Using floor area when coving is fundamentally a linear wall-to-ceiling run.
  • Rounding linear metres too early instead of rounding the final purchase quantity to whole pieces.

Frequently asked questions

How much coving do I need for a 5 m × 4 m room?

The simple rectangular perimeter is 18 m. Divide that by the actual length of the coving piece and round up to a whole piece. For 3 m stock, 18 m is 6 pieces at 0% extra.

Should I always add 10% for coving?

No universal percentage is imposed here. Some suppliers recommend 10%, while other guidance suggests a spare length or a higher allowance for elaborate profiles. Enter the extra that matches your product and cutting plan.

Does the calculator account for corners?

The room perimeter includes the linear run through corners, but the tool does not model each mitre or offcut. Corner complexity can affect how efficiently stock pieces are used.

Do I deduct doors and windows?

Normally coving runs along the wall-to-ceiling junction, so door and window openings do not reduce the ceiling perimeter. If part of the junction will not receive coving, measure the actual run and use the known-run mode.
