How the guttering calculation works

Base sections = round up(run ÷ stock length)

For one uninterrupted straight run, the starting number of straight joins is base sections minus one. A system may use separate union fittings, socketed joints or another joint detail, so verify the actual components.

Spacing-based supports = round up(run ÷ maximum spacing) + 1

This creates a simple end-to-end support-position estimate that does not exceed the spacing you entered. Manufacturer rules around joints, outlets and corners can require additional or differently located supports.

Why 4 m sections and 0.8 m brackets are not universal

Current UK products show the variation. FloPlast 112 mm half-round gutter is currently retailed in both 2 m and 4 m lengths. FloPlast states that gutter fascia brackets are generally a maximum of 1 m apart, and Polypipe lists several PVCu fascia brackets for fixing at maximum 1.0 m centres. Marley Alutec systems vary by range: some fascia brackets are specified at maximum 750 mm, traditional half-round at 915 mm, and other ranges at 1 m. Those are examples from specific systems, not calculator defaults.

Worked example

For a 12.00 m straight run using actual 4.00 m stock lengths and a manufacturer maximum support spacing of 1.00 m, the base run uses 3 sections, giving 2 straight joints in a simple end-to-end layout and 13 spacing-based support positions. At the default 0% extra, buy 3 sections. If you deliberately choose 5% extra stock, the target becomes 12.60 m and therefore 4 sections to buy—but that purchasing allowance does not automatically create a third installed joint.

Keep hydraulic sizing separate

Length does not tell you whether the gutter and outlet arrangement can carry the design rainfall from the roof. Gutter profile, effective roof area, rainfall intensity, outlet position, downpipe capacity and falls are separate design questions. This page intentionally stops at quantity planning.

What this calculator deliberately leaves out

Whether those joins require separate union fittings depends on the gutter system, so check the component details rather than assuming every product uses the same joint.

How many gutter brackets do I need?

This calculator gives a simple spacing-based support-position count using the maximum centre spacing you enter. Manufacturers can require supports at or near joints, outlets, corners and other fittings, so the final bracket schedule must follow the chosen system’s instructions.

Does this calculator size the gutter or downpipes?

No. It estimates straight-run quantities only. Hydraulic capacity and outlet/downpipe sizing require separate design checks.
