How the pitched roof area calculation works

Pitch factor = 1 ÷ cos(pitch)

Sloping surface area = horizontal projected area × pitch factor. A steeper pitch increases the surface area above the flat plan area.

Simple gable roof

For two equal rectangular slopes, the calculator uses the full roof plan area: length × full horizontal span, then applies the pitch factor. It also shows each slope separately.

Worked example

A simple gable roof measuring 8.00 m along the ridge/eaves and 6.00 m across the full horizontal span has a 48.00 m² plan area. At 35°, the pitch factor is about 1.221. The sloping roof area is therefore about 58.60 m², or 29.30 m² per equal slope.

1. Measure horizontally

Use plan dimensions. If roof overhangs are part of the surface you need, include their horizontal projection in the measurements.

2. Use the real pitch

The cosine factor depends directly on roof pitch. Do not substitute a “typical” angle.

3. Separate complex planes

For asymmetric roofs, dormers, valleys or changes of pitch, calculate each simple roof plane separately and add the areas.

Why roof area is different from footprint area

A pitched surface is longer than its horizontal projection. For a single rectangular plane, the sloping length from eaves to ridge is the horizontal run divided by the cosine of the pitch. Multiply that sloping length by the plane length to get its surface area.

Do not use roof area as a shortcut for every roofing quantity

Roof tiles need the exact product’s tiles-per-m² and chosen breakage/cutting allowance. Membranes depend on real roll coverage and laps. Battens are controlled by gauge and roof geometry. Gutters are linear eaves components. Use those calculators after you have a defensible area.

What this calculator does not model

  • Hips, valleys, dormers, rooflights or abutment deductions.
  • Different pitches on opposing roof slopes unless you calculate each slope separately.
  • Tile/slate coverage, membrane laps, batten gauge or gutter sizing.
  • Structural design, rafter sizing, safe access or Building Regulations compliance.

BMI Redland explains that a classic gable roof can be measured as roof length × sloping roof height × two, and recommends splitting roofs with hips, valleys or multiple sections into individual areas.

The plan-area pitch method used here is the equivalent geometry when the slope length is derived from horizontal run and pitch: horizontal projected area × (1 ÷ cos pitch).

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator add a waste percentage?

No. The result is calculated roof surface area only. Material waste or breakage belongs in the relevant product calculator and should be chosen deliberately.

Can I calculate just one side of a roof?

Yes. Choose “One rectangular slope”, enter that plane’s horizontal length, horizontal eaves-to-ridge run and pitch, then repeat for any other different slope.

Does the simple gable mode include roof overhangs?

Only when the horizontal dimensions you enter include them. The calculator does not invent an overhang.

Can I use this for a complex hip-and-valley roof?

Not as one automatic shape. Split the roof into measurable planes or use reliable drawings/survey data, then calculate and add the individual areas.
