Roofing Membrane Roll Calculator UK
Turn a measured sloping roof area and the membrane’s real effective installed coverage per roll into a whole-roll quantity. No assumed roll size, lap or hidden waste percentage.
Calculate roofing membrane rolls
Enter the actual sloping roof area, then use the effective installed coverage for the exact membrane/system after the required laps, rather than assuming the gross roll area is all usable.
How the roofing membrane calculation works
The calculator rounds that up to whole rolls. If you choose an extra percentage, it applies the percentage to the roof area before the final whole-roll rounding.
Gross roll dimensions do not automatically equal installed coverage. Required headlaps and sidelaps consume part of the roll, and manufacturer lap guidance can vary with the product, pitch, support and installation system.
Worked example
If the measured sloping roof area is 80.00 m² and the chosen membrane/system gives 67.50 m² effective installed coverage per roll, the theoretical requirement is 1.19 rolls. At the default 0% extra, that rounds to 2 whole rolls.
Use measured roof surface area. For simple pitched geometry, start with the Roof Area Calculator.
Check the current manufacturer installation data for the exact membrane, roof pitch/support condition and required laps.
The calculator starts at 0%. Add an allowance only when you have chosen one for cuts, details or ordering strategy.
Why gross roll area is not a universal coverage figure
Current UK products demonstrate the problem. Klober Permo Air 160 is available as a 1.5 m × 50 m roll with 75 m² gross coverage, while Permo Forte 145 is also available in a 1.1 m × 50 m format with 55 m² gross coverage. Klober also states that Permo Air headlap can reduce from 150 mm to 100 mm when using its integral tape arrangement, increasing usable coverage. Marley publishes different minimum horizontal laps at lower and higher roof pitches. These are reasons to use the actual effective installed coverage for the chosen system, not a generic 45 m² default.

What this calculator deliberately leaves out
- Gross roll dimensions as a substitute for effective installed coverage.
- A universal horizontal or vertical lap dimension.
- An automatic 10% waste, cutting or detailing allowance.
- Pitch suitability, wind-zone design, drape, fixing or ventilation requirements.
- Roof tiles, battens, ridge/hip/verge components and guttering.
Planning estimate only. Check the current manufacturer installation data and project specification for the exact membrane system before ordering or installing. The roll count does not establish lap, fixing, ventilation, wind-uplift or Building Regulations compliance.

Frequently asked questions
What is effective installed coverage per roll?
It is the roof area one roll can actually cover once the required laps and installation arrangement are accounted for. It may be lower than width × length printed as the gross roll dimensions.
Can I just enter the gross roll area?
Only if the manufacturer explicitly confirms that figure is the effective coverage for your installation. Otherwise use the effective coverage after the required laps.
Does this calculator choose the membrane lap?
No. Lap requirements can depend on the product and roof conditions. Follow the current manufacturer installation instructions, then enter the resulting effective coverage.
Why is the default extra allowance 0%?
Because there is no universal waste or detailing percentage that suits every roof. Enter an extra percentage only when you have deliberately chosen one for the actual job.
