How the plaster calculator works
The calculation is deliberately simple and auditable. It uses the area you need to cover and the coverage stated for the product/application you intend to use.
Surface area ÷ stated coverage per bag.
Base bags × (1 + your allowance %).
Round the final quantity up to the next whole bag.
Why there is no universal “coverage per bag”
British Gypsum explicitly states that bag coverage varies between different plaster types and directs users to the product-specific coverage information. Its own online plaster coverage calculator also asks users to define the surfaces and product rather than treating every bag as interchangeable. That is why this calculator leaves coverage editable instead of hard-coding one supposedly standard figure.
Do I multiply by the number of coats?
Not automatically. A manufacturer’s published coverage may already relate to the intended product application or system, so blindly multiplying that figure by “two coats” can double-count material. Use the coverage figure that applies to the product and application you are following. If you are estimating genuinely separate applications with separate published coverage figures, calculate them separately and add the bag quantities.
Should I add extra plaster?
The calculator starts at 0% because site conditions, application technique and the product itself vary. If you decide to carry an extra allowance, enter it explicitly. Keeping the base bags and the allowance separate makes it much easier to see what the maths is doing.
Measure the area before you estimate bags
For walls, calculate the surfaces being plastered rather than using floor area as a shortcut. Significant doors and windows can be deducted when they materially change the job. No. The default is 0%. Any allowance is visible and controlled by you.
Can I use it for ceilings?
Yes, if you know the ceiling area and have the correct stated product coverage for the intended ceiling application.
