Use a visible sequence: measure the job, calculate the base quantity, check the assumptions, then convert the result into a real order.

Material estimating is most reliable when the measurement, the mathematical quantity and the commercial order are treated as separate stages. This guide focuses on that process rather than hiding assumptions in a single number.

Plan area is not sloping area

A pitched roof surface is longer than its horizontal run. The steeper the pitch, the greater the slope length for the same half-span.

Use the horizontal run to the ridge

For a simple symmetrical gable roof, half the building span is the horizontal run of each roof slope.

Calculate each plane on complex roofs

Hips, valleys, dormers and extensions should be broken into individual roof planes instead of forcing the whole roof into one rectangle.

Separate area materials from linear materials

Tiles and membrane are mainly area-based. Ridge, hip, verge, gutter and flashing components are measured in lengths or individual units.

Errors worth catching early

  • Complex roofs are easier to audit when each plane is calculated separately.
  • Tile rate, felt coverage and gauge can differ between systems.
  • Battens, ridge, verge and gutter are not simply a percentage of roof area.

Three checks before ordering

Run the calculation twice: once from the raw measurements and once from a second independent measurement or drawing dimension. If the two results differ materially, resolve the measurement before adjusting the waste allowance.
