Why this planner is different from the Brick Calculator
The Brick Calculator is for focused brick arithmetic. This project planner carries that quantity into a buying workflow: optional full-pack rounding plus an optional mortar order based on the product coverage you supply.
If all you need is “how many bricks?”, use the dedicated calculator. If you are preparing the materials order for a wall, stay here and keep the brick and mortar assumptions separate.
How the brick quantity is calculated

This estimator uses the face length and height you enter, so a different brick format or joint changes the calculated bricks-per-square-metre rate instead of being hidden behind a fixed 60/120 rule.

Why mortar is not guessed
Mortar demand changes with brick format, joint dimensions, wall construction, product formulation, workmanship and how the manufacturer states coverage. A single universal “bags per square metre” number would hide those variables. The planner therefore leaves mortar blank until you enter a coverage rate for the product you intend to use.
If the product gives coverage as bricks laid per bag, choose that basis. If it gives coverage as square metres of one-face brickwork per bag, choose the area basis; for a one-brick/two-face wall the planner doubles the face-area demand before applying that rate.

Brick allowance and pack rounding are not the same thing
An allowance is a project decision made before ordering. Pack rounding is a commercial consequence of the pack size you are buying. The estimator keeps them separate so you can see whether a full-pack order adds more bricks on top of the allowance-adjusted figure.

Worked buying example
Suppose a wall is 6 m long × 2.4 m high with 2 m² of openings. Gross area is 14.4 m² and net area is 12.4 m². With a 215 × 65 mm brick face, 10 mm joint and one-face wall, the transparent modular calculation gives roughly 59.3 bricks/m² before rounding individual bricks. That produces about 735 base bricks. From there, the order depends on the allowance you choose and the pack quantity for the brick you are actually buying.
The mortar figure is intentionally not filled in from a generic rule. Enter the coverage from your chosen product and the estimator will apply that rate to the project, with a separate mortar allowance if you want one.
Common ordering mistakes
- Using gross wall area and forgetting to deduct significant doors or windows.
- Treating 60 bricks/m² as universal when brick height, length or joint size is different.
- Using one allowance percentage for both bricks and mortar without checking why.
- Assuming every brick is supplied in the same pack quantity.
- Guessing mortar coverage instead of checking the actual product or system.
- Confusing a quantity estimate with structural wall design or compliance.
Frequently asked questions
Does the estimator assume 60 bricks per square metre?
No. It calculates the brick rate from the brick face dimensions plus the mortar joint, then applies the selected wall construction. With a common 215 × 65 mm face and 10 mm joint, the result is close to the familiar 60 bricks/m² for one face.
Does it calculate mortar automatically?
Only when you enter a coverage rate for the mortar product you intend to use. There is no hidden universal bags-per-square-metre assumption.
Can it round bricks to full packs?
Yes. Enter the actual pack quantity for the brick you are buying and the estimator rounds the allowance-adjusted brick quantity up to whole packs.
Should I deduct doors and windows?
Deduct meaningful openings that will not contain brickwork. Small detailing gains and losses are project-specific, so the planner does not invent a blanket adjustment.
