The practical dimensional reference behind the familiar 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm UK brick, nominal 10 mm mortar joints and the “about 60 bricks per square metre” rule.

The most widely used UK clay-brick work size is 215 mm long × 102.5 mm wide × 65 mm high. Add a nominal 10 mm mortar joint and the common coordinating size becomes 225 × 112.5 × 75 mm. That distinction is the key to both setting-out dimensions and bricks-per-square-metre maths.

The Brick Development Association describes work size as the dimensions stated by the manufacturer. Its current brickwork-dimensions guidance uses 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm as the most widely used work size for UK clay bricks and a nominal 10 mm joint for standard coordinating dimensions.

Length215 mm is the long face dimension in the common metric format.
Depth / width102.5 mm is the common brick depth.
Height65 mm is the common unit height before the bed joint.

Work size and coordinating size are not the same thing

The physical brick does not suddenly become 225 mm long when it is laid. The extra dimension represents the nominal mortar joint used to coordinate brickwork.

This matters because quantity and setting-out calculations normally need the brick plus the intended joint, not the bare brick face alone. Manufacturer tolerances also mean actual fired units are not assumed to be perfectly identical to the declared work size; use the current product declaration where dimensional tolerance matters.

Why a standard UK brick works out at about 60 bricks per m²

For one face of brickwork, use the exposed brick length and height plus the nominal vertical and horizontal joints. With a 215 mm × 65 mm face and 10 mm joints, the coordinating face is approximately 225 mm × 75 mm.

Bricks per m² = 1 ÷ (coordinating length in metres × coordinating height in metres)
1 ÷ (0.225 × 0.075) = 59.26 bricks per m².

That geometric result is why UK estimating commonly uses about 60 standard metric bricks per m² for a half-brick / one-face quantity. “60” is a useful rounded planning rate under those assumptions, not a universal constant for every brick product or joint.

The second figure does not mean a different brick has 120 visible faces in a square metre. It is a material-quantity convention for a wall built at roughly one brick thickness, where the brick count is about double the one-face quantity. Bond and wall design remain project decisions.

What the 75 mm coordinating height means for courses

A 65 mm brick with a nominal 10 mm bed joint gives a 75 mm vertical module. This makes quick setting-out sense checks straightforward when standard assumptions apply.

Not every UK brick is 65 mm high

The common metric format is widespread, but it is not the only brick size sold in the UK. Manufacturers produce 73 mm-high bricks, longer or thinner formats, specials and bespoke shapes. Forterra, for example, currently lists London Brick products in both 65 mm and 73 mm heights, while Wienerberger publishes standard and non-standard formats.

Once the brick face dimensions change, the bricks-per-m² rate changes. The safest workflow is therefore:

  1. Take the actual length and height from the manufacturer or supplier product data.
  2. Use the intended nominal bed/perpend joint for the job.
  3. Calculate the coordinating face area.
  4. Use that rate in the Brick Calculator rather than forcing a 60-brick shortcut onto a different format.

How many standard bricks are there per square metre?

Using a 215 × 65 mm brick face with nominal 10 mm joints gives about 59.3 bricks per m² geometrically, commonly rounded to about 60 bricks per m² for one face of standard metric brickwork.

Does the 10 mm mortar joint form part of the brick size?

No. The brick itself remains 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm in the common format. Adding the nominal joint gives the coordinating module of 225 × 112.5 × 75 mm.

Are all UK bricks 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm?
