This tool deliberately separates the mathematical mortar quantity from extra allowance and bag rounding. It does not silently prescribe a 10% waste factor or one fixed mortar rate.

What the geometry method includes: the nominal bed and perpend joint volume around a simple stretcher-bond brick module. It does not know how much mortar enters frogs/perforations, is squeezed from joints, dropped, left in the mixer or used in special details.

How this mortar calculator works

The default method estimates the volume occupied by the nominal mortar joints around each brick module. It uses the brick length, height and depth plus the joint thickness you enter, then multiplies that per-brick joint volume by the number of bricks.

Geometric mortar per brick = ((brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint) × brick depth) − (brick length × brick height × brick depth). All dimensions are converted from millimetres to metres. Base mortar = per-brick joint volume × brick quantity. Final mortar = base mortar + your selected allowance.

With the common 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm brick and a nominal 10 mm joint, the geometry produces about 0.297 m³ per 1,000 bricks before any allowance. That is a mathematical joint-volume starting point, not a promise of actual site consumption.

Why this tool does not hard-code one mortar rate

Real consumption varies with the masonry unit, frog or perforation geometry, joint thickness and profile, bond and detailing, workmanship and site losses. Current UK calculators use several different approaches: some start from wall area, some from brick count, and some expose unit size and joint thickness. This calculator keeps the basis visible and lets you replace the geometric estimate with your own rate when you have better project evidence.

Bagged mortar: use the product’s fresh-mortar yield

Bag size in kilograms is not the same thing as fresh mortar volume. Product formulations differ, so the bag field asks for litres of fresh mortar per bag rather than assuming every 20 kg or 25 kg bag yields the same amount. For example, CEMEX publishes a specific fresh-mortar yield and brick coverage for its own bagged mortar products. That is useful evidence for those products, not a universal bag conversion.

Do not use this page to choose the mortar specification

This calculator answers a quantity question only. Mortar specification can depend on the bricks or blocks, exposure, structural requirements, movement, sulphate conditions, heritage fabric and the project design. Brick Development Association guidance treats mortar selection as a technical design/material issue, not simply a volume calculation.

The geometric method does not model frogs, perforations, special bonds, piers, arches, pointing-only work or site losses. For existing or historic masonry, do not assume a modern cement mortar is suitable.

Frequently asked questions

How much mortar do I need for 1,000 bricks?

There is no single reliable universal figure. With 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm bricks and a nominal 10 mm joint, this calculator’s simple geometric method gives about 0.297 m³ per 1,000 bricks before any extra allowance. Actual consumption can differ, so use your own proven rate when you have one.

Does the calculator add waste automatically?

No. The extra allowance starts at 0%, keeping the base calculation visible. You decide what additional quantity is appropriate for the project.

Can it calculate bags of ready-mixed mortar?

Yes. Enter the fresh-mortar yield in litres per bag from the exact product data. The result then rounds up to whole bags.

Why can’t I just enter the bag weight?

Because kilograms of dry product do not convert to one universal volume of fresh mortar. Water demand and formulation vary by product, so fresh yield is the safer purchasing input.

Does this choose a mortar mix for my wall?

No. Mortar specification is project-specific. This calculator estimates quantity only and deliberately does not prescribe a cement, lime or sand ratio.
