Mortar estimating is not just “bricks × one fixed number”. The quantity can change with brick dimensions, joint thickness, brick frogs or perforations, joint profile, workmanship and the mortar product itself. A useful estimate therefore starts with a known brick quantity, states the mortar-rate basis, calculates a wet-mortar volume, then converts that result into the product or site-mix quantities actually being used.
The quick estimating sequence
1. Start with a sensible brick quantity
If the brick count is wrong, a highly precise mortar rate will only produce a precisely wrong result. Work out the net brick quantity first, including the correct wall construction and deductions for openings.

Do not apply mortar to gross wall areas that have already been removed as doors, windows or other openings.
2. Choose the mortar-rate basis you can actually defend
There is no single mortar-consumption figure that is reliable for every brick wall. The best basis depends on what information you have.

The Brick Mortar Calculator deliberately offers both a geometric method and a custom rate per 1,000 bricks. For purchasing a specific proprietary mortar, current manufacturer yield or coverage should normally be the stronger commercial check because it reflects that actual product.
3. Understand what a geometric mortar estimate is doing
A simple geometric method treats the mortar around each brick as the difference between a coordinating brick module and the brick itself. Using the common 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm brick dimensions and a nominal 10 mm joint gives a transparent planning rate rather than a hidden constant.
The Builder’s Toolkit method adds the nominal joint to brick length and height, retains the brick depth, then subtracts the brick volume.
That method is useful because the assumptions are visible and editable. It is still an approximation. Real bricks may have frogs or perforations, beds may not be perfectly uniform, mortar can be lost during laying, and the finished joint profile can affect consumption.
4. Calculate the base wet-mortar volume first
Once you have chosen the rate, keep the base wet-mortar quantity separate from any extra allowance.
For example, imagine you have 750 bricks and a rate justified for your job of 0.40 m³ per 1,000 bricks. The calculation is:
Base wet-mortar quantity = 0.30 m³ or 300 litres.
The 0.40 m³ rate above is only an arithmetic example. It is not a universal UK mortar rate. Replace it with the geometry, project history or current product coverage that genuinely applies to the job.
5. Add an extra allowance deliberately
Site conditions vary, so the guide does not prescribe one compulsory “waste” percentage. Keep the base quantity visible and apply an extra allowance only when you have a reason to do so.
Final planning volume = base mortar + additional mortar
If you chose a 5% allowance for the 0.30 m³ example, the arithmetic would be 0.30 × 5% = 0.015 m³ extra, giving 0.315 m³ in total. That 5% is an example of the maths, not a recommendation for every job.

6. Convert wet mortar into bags using the actual product yield
Bag weight alone does not tell you how many litres of fresh mortar the bag will produce. Use the manufacturer’s stated fresh yield or brick coverage for the exact product.
As a current product-specific example, CEMEX states that each 25 kg bag of its M4/M12 Natural Dry Mortar yields approximately 12 litres of fresh mortar and is sufficient for approximately 20 standard house bricks laid with a uniform 10 mm joint. That is useful evidence for that product — not permission to assume every 25 kg bag from every manufacturer has the same coverage.

When both fresh yield and brick coverage are published, compare the two routes. A large disagreement is a signal to re-check the assumptions before ordering.
7. Keep mortar volume separate from the mix specification
The quantity estimate tells you how much mortar is required. It does not tell you which mortar should be used. The Brick Development Association notes that mortar selection should consider appearance, structural requirements, construction position, exposure and compatibility between brick and mortar strength.
If the job uses site-mixed mortar, determine the correct specified mix first. Then use the Sand & Cement Mix Calculator to split the required volume into components using the mix that actually applies. Do not let a quantity page silently choose the mortar designation for you.
A practical ordering workflow
- Confirm the net brick quantity for the job.
- Choose the best available mortar-rate basis: geometry, proven project rate or manufacturer coverage.
- Calculate the base wet-mortar requirement.
- Add any extra allowance as a separate, visible figure.
- For bagged mortar, use the exact product’s current fresh yield or bricks-per-bag coverage.
- Round only the final commercial quantity to whole bags, packs or delivery units.
- Check the mortar specification and site instructions separately from the quantity estimate.

How much mortar do I need for 1,000 bricks?
There is no single figure that is reliable for every job. Brick dimensions, joint thickness, frogs/perforations, joint profile, workmanship and product yield all affect consumption. Use a transparent geometry estimate, reliable project history or current manufacturer coverage and keep the assumption visible.
How many bricks will one bag of mortar lay?
It depends on the product. Use the current coverage stated by the manufacturer for the exact bag you are buying. Do not transfer one manufacturer’s bricks-per-bag figure to another product.
Is a 10 mm mortar joint always assumed?
A nominal 10 mm joint is a common dimensional basis in UK brickwork guidance, but the actual project and brickwork specification govern. If the intended joint differs, use that value in the estimate.
Should I add 5% or 10% extra mortar?
There is no universal allowance suitable for every site. Keep the base quantity separate and choose any extra allowance to reflect the actual job rather than accepting a hidden default.
Can I calculate cement and sand directly from the brick count?
It is safer to estimate the required mortar volume first, then split that volume using the mortar mix that is actually specified. This prevents the quantity calculation from accidentally choosing the mortar specification.
