How the sand and cement calculator works
This page starts after you already know how much finished mortar, screed or other sand-and-cement mix the job requires. It does not estimate wall-joint volume or choose a construction specification. It simply divides your known volume according to the ratio you enter.
Planning volume = finished volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Dry ingredient volume = planning volume × dry-volume factor
Sand volume = dry volume × sand parts ÷ total parts
Cement volume = dry volume × cement parts ÷ total parts
What does a 4:1 or 5:1 ratio mean?
On this calculator the ratio is sand : cement by volume. A 4:1 entry contains five total parts, so four-fifths of the calculated dry ingredient volume is allocated to sand and one-fifth to cement. A 5:1 entry contains six total parts. The maths is straightforward; choosing the correct ratio for the application is a separate specification decision.
Ratio examples are not mix specifications. Mortar, screed, render, pointing and other applications can require different materials and proportions. If drawings, a specification, product instructions or competent guidance state a mix, use that information rather than treating an online example as a recommendation.
Why the dry-volume factor is editable
The finished volume of a mixed material is not automatically identical to the loose volume of its dry ingredients. Moisture, sand bulking, grading, compaction, air content and the estimating method all affect conversions. For that reason this tool starts at 1.00 — no conversion — instead of silently applying the inherited 1.33 factor. If your chosen estimating method gives you a supported factor, enter it explicitly and the result shows its effect.

From cement volume to kilograms and bags
A volume split alone does not establish cement mass. To convert cement volume to kilograms, the calculator needs a bulk density supplied by you. This is intentionally blank by default rather than hiding a universal density assumption.
If you enter a density, cement mass = cement volume × density. If a bag size is also entered, the tool shows both the theoretical bag count and the whole-bag purchasing quantity. UK general-purpose cement is commonly sold in 25 kg bags, but pack formats do vary, so check the actual product rather than relying on the default field.

Frequently asked questions
What does a 4:1 sand and cement ratio mean?
In this calculator it means four equal volume parts of sand to one equal volume part of cement. There are five total parts. That explains the arithmetic only; it does not make 4:1 the correct specification for a particular job.
Does the calculator choose the correct mix ratio?
No. Enter the ratio required by the project specification, drawing, product instructions or other competent guidance.
Why does the dry-volume factor start at 1.00?
Because this tool does not assume one universal dry-volume conversion. A factor of 1.00 applies no conversion. Change it only when your estimating method supports another value.
Why is cement density blank?
Because cement volume cannot be responsibly converted to mass without a density assumption. Enter a value you can justify for the material/estimating method, or leave it blank and use the volume result.
How many cement bags do I need?
Once a cement density is entered, the calculator converts cement volume to estimated mass and divides by the editable bag size. It shows the mathematical bag count and rounds up separately to a whole-bag purchasing quantity.
